‘6-month limit for usage’: PTA issues latest update on blocking SIM cards

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a warning regarding the suspension of mobile SIM cards that have remained inactive for six months. Telecom operators now have the authority to block SIM cards that have not been used for calls, messages, or internet services for 180 consecutive days, the officials said. Once a SIM card is deactivated, the associated number will be reassigned to another user. After this reassignment, the original owner of the number will have no legal claim to it. To prevent any inconvenience, the PTA has advised users to continue using their SIM cards responsibly. Those who wish to maintain ownership of their numbers despite inactivity can contact their telecom operator via a written request or email, ensuring the SIM remains active for a specified period. The move aims to minimize the number of inactive SIMs in circulation and reduce the risk of misuse while optimizing the use of mobile numbers in Pakistan. Earlier this month, PTA launched a new initiative aimed at helping overseas Pakistanis protect their mobile SIM cards and prevent them from being deactivated during extended periods abroad. The authority, in a statement, highlighted that this move reflects its ongoing efforts to ensure continuous telecom services for the Pakistani community living overseas. Through this initiative, overseas users can secure their SIM cards for a designated time by notifying their respective telecom providers and paying any necessary charges. This service allows Pakistanis abroad to retain their original mobile numbers, ensuring they can stay connected with family and friends back home in Pakistan without interruption. For prepaid users, the PTA has advised that SIM cards must be used at least once every 180 days to remain active. This can be achieved by making a call, sending a text message, or using mobile data within the specified period. For postpaid subscribers, it is essential to ensure timely payment of monthly bills and any outstanding charges to prevent suspension of their service.
