ISLAMABAD – Apple, a leading American tech company, is set to begin manufacturing iPhones in Pakistan following the government’s approval of incentives under the new Mobile and Electronics Manufacturing Framework. As part of the framework, Apple has also agreed to refurbish older iPhones for re-export, with an expected revenue of $100 million in the first year from these refurbished devices. Apple’s management has requested discounted land rates, an 8% performance incentive, and plans to repair iPhones that are two to three years old. A top official of the Engineering Development Board (EDB) told media that the conditions laid forth by the Apply has been added to the proposed framework, which has been sent to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for approval. He noted that Apple is working in Indonesia, Malaysia and India under similar framework models. Currently, the government offers a 6% performance incentive to local mobile manufacturers, but this will be raised to 8% to attract Apple and other global tech companies. The new policy also aims to boost investment in the production of laptops, tablets, smartwatches, and accessories, with the goal of establishing Pakistan as a regional hub for mobile and electronics exports. Additionally, the government plans to impose a 6% export levy on phones priced above Rs100,000, generating funds for technology investment. However, no levy will be imposed on phones priced between Rs50,000 and Rs60,000. The government expects to raise Rs62 billion through this initiative.
