CAIRO – Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta, the country’s official religious advisory body, has issued a fatwa declaring the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications, including tools like ChatGPT, as impermissible for interpreting the Quran. The ruling comes in response to an inquiry about using AI to help explain the meanings and interpretations of the Quranic verses. The Dar al-Ifta emphasized that relying on AI for understanding the Quran could lead to the spread of misinformation and create misleading interpretations. The fatwa said religious teachings require careful, informed understanding that can only be provided by qualified scholars with extensive knowledge and experience. In the ruling, the Dar al-Ifta further explained that only trustworthy and accredited religious authorities, such as established scholars and recognized religious institutions, should be consulted when interpreting the Quran. These authorities ensure that the correct religious teachings are conveyed to the public. This fatwa comes at a time when educational, religious, and research institutions worldwide are debating the benefits and drawbacks of using AI technology for various applications, including religious education and scholarly research.
