DHAKA – At least three people were injured in a grenade attack near a polling station in Gopalganj district during the Bangladesh elections 2026, the local media reported on Thursday. The grenade attack took place when the polling was underway at Gopalganj polling station. The security officials, police and the rescue officials reached the sport and started their operations. The victims were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, officials said. The local media reported that the blast caused partial damage to the main entrance of the polling station. The local authorities launched an investigation to determine the circumstances and motive behind the incident. This attack highlights the ongoing challenges faced by election authorities in maintaining a safe environment for voters amid heightened political tensions in the country. The attack took place as voting continued for Bangladesh’s national parliamentary elections, which are shaping up to be a closely contested race. A recent public survey predicts a tight competition between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. The survey indicated that the BNP-led coalition could secure approximately 44.1% of the vote while the Jamaat-led alliance is projected to receive around 43.9%. The incident has raised concerns over security at polling stations, with authorities urging calm and assuring voters that safety measures have been strengthened to prevent further incidents.
