DHAKA – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which secured a two-thirds majority in the recent general elections, has announced plans to formally seek the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India. BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed, elected from the Cox’s Bazar-1 constituency, said the party would pursue all legal avenues to ensure that Sheikh Hasina is brought back to face court proceedings. He made these remarks while talking to the reporters outside the party’s central office in Dhaka He stated that the matter would be taken up formally with the Indian government through diplomatic channels. Ahmed emphasized that the issue should be resolved between the foreign ministries of Bangladesh and India in accordance with international law. He added that the BNP government would press for her return so she could face trial in cases related to crimes against humanity. The BNP leadership said that seeking her extradition was necessary to uphold the country’s legal and judicial system and ensure accountability under the law.
