The attack came in the wake of Tehran’s retaliatory strikes across the region in response to the US-Israeli assault on Iran. The Ras Tanura complex, located on Saudi Arabia’s Gulf coast, houses one of the Middle East’s largest refineries, with a daily capacity of 550,000 barrels. It also serves as a critical export terminal for Saudi crude. The drone strike was part of a wider wave of attacks across the Gulf region, which also targeted major cities including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, Manama, and Duqm in Oman.
