Changing strategic dynamics

2026-02-02 - 23:06

FIELD Marshal Asim Munir has stated that the defenc forces are fully prepared to confront every threat. This statement, in fact, points toward Pakistan’s defensive preparedness and its progress in the fields of innovation and invention in response to the changes taking place in modern warfare. Global circumstances clearly indicate that the world currently stands on the brink of a terrifying, dangerous and potentially global series of wars. Under these conditions, every major country in the world has focused its attention on the development of the most advanced weapons. With the help of modern technology, it has become possible to assess the risks of war, enemy attacks, advances and planning, and, by choosing appropriate opportunities, inflict heavy losses on the enemy. Such technology has enabled even small groups to deceive large armies and alter the balance of war. The use of technology has also increased the chances of terrorists receiving assistance. This situation is clearly a matter of concern for a country like Pakistan, which has continuously been a victim of terrorism. The Army Chief’s expression of satisfaction regarding the professional preparedness of the Pakistan Army indicates that the country’s defence experts are taking these threats and concerns seriously and are closely monitoring developments in modern warfare. Modern wars are no longer confined solely to battlefields; the expansion of technology has drawn civilians into the sphere of warfare as well. For example, acts of terrorism carried out in Pakistan through proxies are creating threats to the lives of innocent people. In addition, fifth- and sixth-generation warfare can be used to turn a country’s population against its government. In this regard, modern social media platforms are also being utilized and deliberate efforts are being made to create unrest within states. These days, strategic dynamics have changed significantly. Major transformations have occurred in modern technology, cyber warfare and the intelligence domain. Alongside this, military strategy has become more flexible and faster in execution. Moreover, proxy wars, unconventional threats and drone technology have collectively reshaped the overall security landscape. The role of artificial intelligence in warfare is increasing day by day. For example, autonomous drones, intelligence analysis and the use of artificial intelligence in cybersecurity have not only made information gathering easier but have also improved threat prediction. At the same time, artificial intelligence is helping make military strategies more effective and responsive. This is a very interesting and rapidly developing field. Countries around the world are incorporating modern technologies into their defence preparations, including artificial intelligence, cyber warfare and autonomous systems. In this context, Pakistan has also significantly improved its defence capabilities, particularly by emphasizing indigenous development and self-reliance. Pakistan is incorporating modern trends into its defence policy by focusing on drone technology, intelligence-based systems and cybersecurity. Alongside this, Pakistan is also promoting local production and self-sufficiency so that it can remain aligned with the demands of modern era. Pakistan is steadily moving toward self-reliance in the defence sector. JF-17 Thunder, Karakoram-8, drone technology and other defence equipment are evidence that Pakistan has developed noteworthy defence capabilities despite limited resources. The performance of Pakistan’s defence system and air power during the May conflict attracted significant global attention. The world also witnessed a clear example of Pakistan’s military expertise last year when Pakistan delivered a strong and serious response to Indian attacks. This demonstrates that Pakistan is not only improving its defence capabilities but also possesses a strong retaliatory capacity. —The writer is contributing columnist, based in Faisalabad.
