LAHORE – As the vibrant 2026 Basant festival approaches, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has issued an important safety message to the residents of Lahore. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Nawaz expressed her concern for the safety and wellbeing of those participating in the annual kite-flying celebrations, a beloved tradition in the region. In her statement, the chief minister specifically addressed those celebrating Basant on rooftops, a common practice during the festival. She urged people to take extra precautions, especially if their rooftops do not have permanent walls or railings. Nawaz recommended securing the rooftop temporarily with tightly tied, three-tiered nylon ropes to prevent any accidents. “My dear Lahories, your safety and wellbeing matter to me,” Nawaz wrote. “If you are celebrating Basant and your rooftop does not have a permanent wall or railing, please secure it temporarily with tightly tied, three-tiered nylon ropes to prevent any mishaps. May Allah protect you all. Ameen.” Four Holidays announced in Lahore Meanwhile, the Punjab government has declared official holidays for the 6th and 7th of February 2026 in Lahore only, as confirmed by a formal notification issued by the Services and General Administration Department. In the same notification, the government has clarified that the public will benefit from a four-day break, as the 5th of February marks Kashmir Day, and Sunday, the 8th of February, will be a regular holiday. This means that government offices, schools, and other institutions will remain closed from Friday, 6th February, to Sunday, 8th February.
