Fire erupted following a gas cylinder explosion in a residential high-rise in Karachi’s North Nazimabad on Sunday, killing a teenager and injuring five others. According to rescue and police officials, the teenager was identified as 16-year-old Burhan. As many as five people were injured, including a woman and a child, in the tragic incident. Out of these, three were reported to be in critical condition at the hospital. According to officials, the cylinder exploded inside a flat on the 10th floor. It damaged the roof of a flat on the ninth floor and the building’s lift. According to the media reports, the electricity was disconnected, residents were safely evacuated, and the building was cleared for emergency operations. Rescue teams carried out firefighting with the help of four fire tenders, a water bowser and two snorkels. SSP Central Dr Imran Khan stated that initial information suggests the blast was caused by a gas cylinder explosion in the flat. He, however, said the bomb disposal squad would determine the exact cause of the explosion. Falling debris also damaged several vehicles parked beneath the building. After several hours, officials said the fire was brought under control and cooling operations were underway, while police and relevant authorities began collecting evidence and searching the affected area.
