Karachi: The death toll from the firing incident at the US Consulate in Karachi has risen to 11 after another injured youth succumbed to his injuries, ARY News reported on Tuesday. Ten people were initially killed and 97 injured on Sunday when protesters allegedly breached the compound’s outer wall following reports of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s assassination in US-Israeli strikes on Iran. The injured were shifted to various hospitals across the city for treatment. According to the police surgeon, several victims remain in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll may increase further. At Karachi’s Civil Hospital Trauma Centre, five injured persons are under treatment, with all reported to be in critical condition. At a hospital in the Garden area, 11 injured individuals are receiving treatment. Meanwhile, six injured persons are admitted to a private hospital on Stadium Road, where two are said to be in critical condition. The police surgeon confirmed that eight bodies were initially brought to hospitals, while three more victims died during treatment. Of the 97 injured, 75 have been discharged after receiving medical care. Separately, Reuters reported that US Marines opened fire on demonstrators during the storming of the Karachi consulate over the weekend, citing two US officials. The report described the incident as a rare use of force at a diplomatic facility that could escalate tensions amid widespread protests over the killing of Iran’s leader. Responding to the report, Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon said the Sindh government has formed a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate the incident. “The JIT is working and will submit its report within 15 days,” Memon said. He added that the investigation would determine how the firing began and who was involved. He further stated that no conclusions could be drawn based on media reports before the JIT completes its findings. Authorities have said that investigations are ongoing.
