DSP among three cops martyred in terrorist attack on police mobile in Kohat

KOHAT – A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and two other police officials were martyred in a terrorist attack on a police mobile in a suburban area of Kohat, the police confirmed on Tuesday. Kohat District Police Officer (DPO) said that the incident occurred on Shakardara Road when unidentified militants opened indiscriminate fire on a patrolling police vehicle. As a result of the intense gunfire, several personnel sustained critical injuries. The police officials later confirmed that DSP Waheed Mehmood was among the three officers who embraced martyrdom in the line of duty. Four other policemen were injured in the attack and were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Hospital sources said that some of the injured officials were in stable condition, while others were undergoing further medical evaluation. The officials stated that the assailants not only targeted the police mobile with gunfire but also set the vehicle on fire before fleeing the scene. The attack caused panic in the surrounding locality which promptedswift action from law enforcement agencies. A heavy contingent of police was dispatched to the area, and a search operation was launched to trace and apprehend the attackers. The checkpoints were set up on key routes, and security in and around Kohat was heightened following the incident. The senior police officials termed the assault a cowardly act of terrorism and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice. An investigation into the attack has been initiated.
