Principal Amir-ud-Din Medical College, Prof Farooq Afzal, has stressed the need for urgent national attention to fight cancer, which has become a serious global, social and economic challenge. Speaking on World Cancer Day, he underscored that cancer is no longer just a medical issue but a symbol of fear that requires a shift in priority toward prevention and public awareness. Highlighting tobacco use, poor diet, physical inactivity and environmental pollution as primary risk factors, Prof Farooq Afzal said that global research confirms a significant portion of cancer cases can be prevented by simply adopting a healthy lifestyle. Expressing deep concern over the tendency of patients, particularly women, to ignore early symptoms, he warned that wasting time on unqualified practitioners or home remedies instead of seeking professional medical advice can be fatal. AMC Principal stressed that early diagnosis is the most effective tool for survival, as the chances of successful treatment increase manifold during the initial stages. He further highlighted that the battle against cancer requires more than just modern medicine; it necessitates strong emotional and moral support from the family and society. He urged media and social organisations to dispel myths and promote regular medical check-ups as a collective responsibility to mitigate the impact of this deadly disease.
