ALASKA – A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Nikolski in the US state of Alaska on Sunday evening, according to seismic monitoring agencies. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake occurred at 7:11pm local time on February 22. The tremor originated at a depth of approximately 0.6 miles beneath the Earth’s surface, classifying it as an extremely shallow earthquake. Seismologists explain that shallow quakes are often felt more intensely because their epicentres are located close to the surface, which can increase the likelihood of localized damage. The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) also confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude at 6.3. The initial reports indicate that residents in and around the Nikolski area experienced strong shaking. However, there were no immediate reports of major casualties or significant structural damage. The experts noted that details regarding the magnitude, depth, and precise epicentre could be updated after further technical analysis in the coming hours. Minor damage, such as fallen household items or cracked glass, remains possible in areas close to the epicentre. The local authorities are continuing to monitor the situation while emergency response teams remain on alert in case of aftershocks or delayed damage assessments.
