IN a significant and compassionate move, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz has approved the launch of a free ambulance service aimed at transporting deceased individuals from public hospitals to their homes. While this may seem like a small gesture, it demonstrates a greater vision for a healthcare system that prioritizes the needs of the people. The approval of the free ambulance service is a part of a broader commitment to improving healthcare in Punjab, with CM’s tenure so far marked by several innovative and life-changing initiatives. Under her leadership, the provincial government has introduced fully funded, specialized health cards for cancer and cardiac patients, offering coverage up to Rs. 10 lakh. This is a revolutionary step, as it ensures that individuals suffering from serious illnesses no longer need to worry about the staggering costs of treatment, which can often be a barrier to life-saving care. The launch of the “Clinic on Wheels” program is another ground-breaking initiative, providing essential healthcare services to those who might otherwise struggle to access them. In parallel, the transformation of 150 health centers across the province is a massive step towards modernizing the healthcare infrastructure, bringing improved facilities and specialized care to communities that were previously underserved. Revamping of Mother and Child Health Centers is a step in the right direction, as it ensures that expectant mothers and their children receive the highest standard of care during the most critical stages of their lives. The people of Punjab have begun to recognize and appreciate the efforts being made by the provincial government. While these initiatives are praiseworthy, there is still much work to be done. One area that requires urgent attention is the condition of tehsil and district hospitals. Many people are still forced to travel to big cities for better medical treatment. The Punjab government must focus on equipping these hospitals with both adequate human resources and up-to-date facilities.Transforming these hospitals into fully functional, self-sustaining healthcare facilities will relieve pressure on major hospitals and provide a seamless healthcare experience for rural populations.
