ISLAMABAD – Greek Ambassador Eleni Porichi declared on Tuesday that learning new languages opens doors to understanding cultures and building lasting global connections. Addressing an enthusiastic gathering at the International Greek Language Day Competition in Islamabad, the ambassador passionately encouraged students to dive into the richness of the Greek language, explore its ancient history, and consider the exciting educational opportunities available in Greece. She praised the eager participation of students and emphasized that such cultural and academic exchanges play a vital role in strengthening international relations, especially between Greece and Pakistan, two nations with proud and ancient civilizations. The high-profile event was hosted by Roots International Schools & Colleges in partnership with the Embassy of Greece at the school’s Wellington Campus in Islamabad. Students from a wide range of institutions came together to celebrate learning, dialogue, and cultural exchange, all centered around the Greek language. Speaking to the audience, Ambassador Porichi highlighted how programs like this help young people look beyond their own borders. “Learning a language is not just about words,” she said. “It is about understanding people, traditions, and the spirit of another nation.” Calling language a bridge between cultures, she applauded the remarkable interest Pakistani students have shown in Greek studies and urged them to take their passion further by considering Greece for higher education. According to her, Greek universities offer world-class academic programs along with the opportunity to experience a vibrant and historic cultural environment. In her concluding remarks, the ambassador expressed heartfelt appreciation to Roots International Schools & Colleges and all partner organizations for making the event a success and for actively promoting Greek language and heritage in Pakistan. CEO of Roots International Schools & Colleges, Walid Mushtaq, also addressed the gathering, stressing that such competitions spark curiosity among students and expose them to global cultures and languages. He noted that collaboration with the Greek Embassy, Metropolitan University College, and other academic partners is creating new avenues for cooperation between institutions in both countries. Mushtaq added that these partnerships strengthen educational systems and prepare students for a rapidly changing world. He described the event as a major step toward deeper people-to-people connections between Pakistan and Greece, emphasizing that learning foreign languages equips students with the skills needed for future international cooperation. Held under the exciting theme “Compete. Converse. Celebrate Greek,” the competition featured engaging language activities and colorful cultural performances from both Greek and Pakistani traditions, showcasing the shared values and mutual respect between the two nations. The celebration also highlighted the global importance of the Greek language. Following a decision by UNESCO recognizing its historic contribution to world culture, February 9 has been officially declared World Greek Language Day in support of multilingualism and cultural diversity. The event ended on a high note as Ambassador Porichi distributed tablets to participating students, rewarding their hard work and enthusiasm. Organizers said the initiative was designed to raise awareness about Greek culture and encourage Pakistani youth to explore languages beyond their own, opening new horizons for learning and global understanding. With vibrant energy and international spirit, the Islamabad competition proved to be more than just an academic event, it was a true celebration of friendship, culture, and the unifying power of language.
