Islamabad Electric Tram Project – Expected routes unveiled

ISLAMABAD – The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to conduct a feasibility study for the Electric Tram Project in Islamabad as it aims at promoting eco-friendly and modern public transport system in the capital city. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by the CDA chairman, attended by senior officials, including members of Administration, Planning & Design, Finance, and the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad. The meeting focused on the practical implementation and infrastructure requirements for the Electric Tram and Electric Bus projects. The CDA officials decided to initiate a feasibility study for the electric tram system across Islamabad soon. Under the electric tram project, facilities like tram depots, parking, charging infrastructure, and maintenance services will be developed. The project will be implemented in line with a modern Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and is designed to be a fully modern, comfortable, and environmentally friendly transport system. It will also be integrated with the city’s larger public transit network. Expected Routes The CDA chief emphasized the need to connect the electric tram system to key locations in Islamabad, particularly the Islamabad International Airport, and advised a feasibility study for this linkage, considering current ridership statistics and future demand projections. However, he has not shared further details about routes of the electric tram. This historic initiative is expected to not only provide citizens with modern and affordable transportation options but also significantly reduce environmental pollution in Islamabad.
