LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday expressed strong anger over the assault on Ghulam Murtaza, husband of Saadia, who tragically died after falling into a manhole at Bhatti Gate. The police sources confirmed that Ghulam Murtaza would undergo a medical examination under police supervision at a local hospital in Shor Kot to determine the extent of his injuries. Following the medical report, the legal action may be taken against the officers involved in the assault. Ghulam Murtaza had accused SP City Bilal and SHO Bhatti Zain of assault, alleging that the police officers pressured him to admit responsibility for his wife’s death. Inquiry findings An inquiry report prepared by a committee comprising Additional IG Imran Mehmood, DIG Nasir Aziz Work, and DIG Imran Kishwar held SP City Bilal and SHO Bhatti Zain responsible for the assault. The report stated that the officers took Ghulam Murtaza to Bhatti Police Station from the incident site and, instead of questioning his accompanying relatives, immediately contacted the father of the deceased woman. A relative named Tanveer, who was with Ghulam Murtaza, was also detained. Both officers allegedly assaulted Ghulam Murtaza inside the SHO’s office. CCTV footage from the office confirmed the assault, and he was kept in illegal custody for nearly five hours. Ghulam Murtaza told the inquiry team that the officers pressured him to accept responsibility for the deaths of his wife and daughter. The officers claimed that rescue and other authorities had expressed doubts about the death being accidental, prompting them to bring Ghulam Murtaza to the station. The report added that the SP and SHO mishandled the situation unprofessionally and recommended departmental action against them. The inquiry report has been submitted to the IG Punjab, who would forward it to the chief minister. ‘This is Murder’: CM Maryam orders arrests, firings after Bhatti Gate accident
