Lahore to get Pakistan’s first fully underground train – Check route, distance details

LAHORE – The Punjab Transport Department has initiated preparations to launch Pakistan’s first fully underground metro service in Lahore, Blue Line. Reports stated that the project is moving forward, with feasibility and design work accelerated and practical work already begun by the Transport Department and Lahore Development Authority. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has instructed the provincial transport minister to complete the feasibility and design work promptly. Once finalized, the report will clarify project costs, financing models, and the construction timeline. The feasibility report for the 27-kilometer Blue Line is now in the preparation stage. Blue Line Underground Train Route The proposed Blue Line route will run entirely underground from Valencia Town to Babu Sabu Chowk, covering areas including Johar Town, Faisal Town, Garden Town, Kalma Chowk, Gulberg, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, Wahdat Road, and Allama Iqbal Town. The project is expected to be completed within three years and will have the capacity to serve over 250,000 passengers daily. Project costs are estimated to exceed Rs600 billion. For project financing, interest has been expressed by financial firms from China, Japan, and France. Earlier studies were conducted by Japanese agency JICA and Turkish consultants in 2016, with a new transport study completed in June 2024. Preliminary funding and PC-I preparation for the Blue Line are expected in the upcoming budget, with the project planned for inclusion in the 2026–27 fiscal year.
