Landslide victory for BNP

2026-02-13 - 22:16

THE Bangladesh Nationalist Party won a landslide parliamentary election securing a resounding mandate in a pivotal vote that is expected to restore political stability in the country. The BNP, led by Tarique Rehman, the 60-year-old son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and former President Ziaur Rehman and its allies won 211 of the 299 constituency seats, while the rival Jamaat-e-Islami alliance won 70 seats. The overwhelming two-third majority in the Jatiya Sangsad (House of the Nation) will surely enable the new government to carry out reforms and steer the country towards political and economic stabilization after a turbulent phase of the country’s history, which saw an uprising led by the youth leading to the removal of Sheikh Hasina Wajid Government. The massive turn out of the people in the general election has lent credibility to the electoral process and also reflected the highest level of trust of the nation in the new leadership. One of the welcome aspects of the transition is that the opposition JI has demonstrated the sportsman spirit by openly welcoming the outcome of the vote, pledging not to indulge in traditional ‘politics of opposition’ for the sake of it and instead do positive politics. This proclamation augurs well for unity of the nation and smooth working of the new administration enabling it to fulfill electoral commitments. BNP’s campaign promises included financial aid for poor families, a 10-year limit for an individual to remain prime minister, boosting the economy by measures including foreign investments and anti-corruption policies. The task of the next government is reflected by the fact that a referendum was also held alongside general elections on a set of constitutional reforms, including establishing a neutral interim government for election periods, restructuring parliament into a bicameral legislature, increasing women’s representation, strengthening judicial independence and introducing a two-term limit for the prime minister. Reports suggest a clear yes in the referendum, which means the promised reforms will have the backing of the nation and easily sail through the parliament in view of the absolute majority of the BNP and its allies. As Tarique Rehman is poised to become the next Prime Minister of the country, it is expectation of the people that his party, which was forced to boycott the last elections in 2024, will lead the country on a true democratic path after fifteen years of authoritarian rule by Hasina, who is now in exile in India. As for Pakistan-BD relations, these witnessed warmth during the interim period and on the basis of broader understanding between the two countries to take it to new heights, it is expected that their cooperation will see a boost during the tenure of the new government. This has also been highlighted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in his message of felicitation to the leader of the BNP saying he looks forward to working closely with the new Bangladesh leadership to further strengthen historic, brotherly multifaceted bilateral relations and advance shared goals of peace, stability and development in South Asia and beyond.
