ISLAMABAD – Blow to Pakistanis as federal government raised petrol price by Rs5 and diesel by Rs7.32 per litre, sending ripple of worry through households and transporters alike. The petroleum division confirmed that the hike follows global price swings and recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra). Petrol Burden on Everyday Commuters: Petrol, the lifeline for cars, two-wheelers, and rickshaws, increased 2% to Rs258.17 per litre from Rs253.17, tightening budgets for middle- and lower-middle-class families. The government currently charges Rs105 per litre on petrol and Rs97 per litre on diesel. While GST remains zero on fuel, hefty petroleum levies of Rs87 per litre for petrol and Rs79 per litre for diesel—including a Rs2.50 climate support levy—add to the cost. On top of this, custom duties of Rs17–18 per litre and distribution/dealer margins of around Rs17 per litre are also being passed on to consumers.
