LAHORE – The much-anticipated Basant festival 2026, which marks the arrival of spring in Lahore, faced a sluggish start on its first day (February 6) due to unusually low wind speeds. With winds only reaching 3 km/h, kite enthusiasts were left struggling to keep their kites afloat as the skies remained almost still. Basant, traditionally celebrated with vibrant kite flying contests, street festivals, and lively gatherings, was expected to kick off with excitement. However, the calm conditions hindered many who had eagerly awaited the event. Wind Speed Ideal for Kite Flying Today Despite the slow start, hopes remain high for the rest of the festival. The latest weather forecasts suggest that today, February 7, will bring better wind conditions. Experts predict that wind speeds will range between 8-13 km/h, making it an ideal day for kite flying. With this improvement, festival-goers are looking forward to seeing the skies of Lahore filled with colorful kites once again. The Basant festivities are set to continue through February 8. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced that much-anticipated mega Basant event at Lahore’s Liberty Square scheduled for Feb 7 had been called off in light of the devastating attack at an imambargah in the Tarlai area of Islamabad.
