Mangla Hydel power station capacity to increase to 1,310 MW under ongoing up-gradation project

During a visit to the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA)’s Mangla Dam, Chairman Lieutenant General (Retd.) Muhammad Saeed was briefed that work on the Mangla Refurbishment and Upgradation Project is progressing in phases. It was informed that rehabilitation of four generating units has been completed and they are now operational with enhanced generation capacity. Two additional units will be added to the system by the end of 2026, while overall completion of the project is expected in 2030. During the visit, the Chairman reviewed progress at the control room, turbine hall (where units are being rehabilitated), and the intake structure. Member Power WAPDA Muhammad IrfanMiana, General Manager Mangla Dam Organization Fakhar-e-Jahan, General Manager (Hydel) Development Ahsanullah, General Manager/Project Director Mangla Refurbishment Project Ijlal Hussain, along with consultants and contractors, were also present. While reviewing ongoing activities, the Chairman directed contractors to accelerate work to ensure timely completion of the project. He emphasized that this will help reduce Pakistan’s reliance on expensive and environmentally harmful thermal power, thereby strengthening the country’s energy security. WAPDA is executing the Mangla Refurbishment and Upgradation Project at a total cost of Rs. 52.224 billion.
