At least nine people were killed and 18 others injured during violent clashes between Police and protesters outside the US Consulate in Karachi on Sunday, following the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to the Edhi ambulance service, six bodies and 10 injured persons were initially shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi. Officials at the hospital’s trauma centre later confirmed that seven dead bodies and 18 injured had been brought to the facility. Authorities stated that those affected sustained bullet injuries and wounds due to a baton charge and a stampede. On receiving news of the martyrdom of Ali Khamenei, enraged people gathered outside the US Consulate and attempted to enter the premises, pelting stones. The Police resorted to shelling and the use of force to disperse the protesters. Rescue officials earlier reported multiple injuries as clashes intensified in the high-security zone. As authorities closed the road from Sultanabad leading towards Mai Kolachi, traffic was severely affected in the area. Vehicles coming from Jinnah Bridge are being diverted towards I I Chundrigar Road, traffic from Boat Basin is being given a U-turn at Mai Kolachi Phatak, and vehicles from PIDC are being sent back. The road closures caused the worst traffic mess, even on a holiday. Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar has sought details of the incident from the Additional IG Karachi. In a statement, the home minister said that no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands. He directed to strengthen security at sensitive installations across the province.
