LAHORE – It is mandatory for all Muslims to pay Fitrana, also known as Zakat al-Fitr, at the end of Ramadan before the Eidul Fitr prayers. Its primary purpose is to purify the fast and help those in need celebrate Eid with dignity. Every adult Muslim, as well as guardians for dependents, is required to pay Fitrana, typically in the form of staple food items like wheat, dates, or others or their cash equivalent. The contribution ensures that the less fortunate can participate in the festival and reflects the values of compassion, community support, and social responsibility in Islam. Minimum and Maximum Fitrana Amount The minimum amount of Fitrana has been set at Rs300 per person based on wheat. The charity amount increases depending on the food item used as the benchmark. If calculated according to barley, the amount comes to Rs1,050 per person. Those choosing dates as the reference food item are advised to pay Rs2,100, while the amount based on raisins is Rs4,550 per person. The highest recommended amount listed is Rs12,000 per person when calculated according to Ajwa dates. The amount has been calculated based on the current market prices of staple food items in Lahore.
