PAFDA as national model

The formal inauguration of Punjab Agriculture, Food and Drug Authority (PAFDA) is indeed a significant milestone in our long and often uneven journey toward food safety, public health protection and scientific self-reliance. Branded as South Asia’s first and most advanced Punjab Science Enclave, PAFDA brings under one roof high-tech laboratories for agriculture, food and drug testing. Food adulteration, substandard medicines and poor quality agricultural inputs have for decades undermined public health and eroded consumer trust. By launching a state-of-the-art institution equipped with modern technology and skilled human capital, the Punjab government has taken a decisive step toward addressing these challenges systematically rather than through sporadic enforcement drives. The Prime Minister’s emphasis on eliminating adulteration and ensuring hygienic standards rightly underscores that food security today is not merely about availability, but about safety, nutrition and quality. PAFDA’s advanced capabilities in nutrient profiling, microbiological safety testing, ingredient verification and high-end drug testing promise to reduce dependence on foreign laboratories, lower certification costs for exporters and help rebuild global confidence in ‘Made in Pakistan’ products. In an era of increasingly strict international quality regimes, this is no small achievement. However, our food and drug safety challenges are not confined to Punjab. Other provinces face similar issues, and in some cases more acute, yet lack comparable infrastructure. A single flagship institution, no matter how advanced, cannot shoulder the burden for an entire federation. To ensure equitable public health protection, similar science-based authorities must be developed in other provinces tailored to their local agricultural and industrial contexts.PAFDA should therefore be seen not as an endpoint, but as a replicable model. Strengthening inter-provincial collaboration, sharing technical expertise and investing in regional testing facilities will be essential if we have to build a credible, nationwide quality assurance ecosystem. In that sense, the true success of PAFDA will be measured not only by its own performance but how effectively it inspires and informs similar initiatives across the country.
