Pak, UAE forge ahead

2026-01-30 - 01:26

DURING his visit to the UAE, President Asif Ali Zardari held talks with the country’s top leadership and reaffirmed the commitment to further strengthen bilateral relationship. In a meeting with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, both leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral ties across various sectors, particularly trade, investment, infrastructure and technology. Pakistan-UAE relationship is built on a foundation of strong cultural and economic ties, with the UAE hosting a large Pakistani Diaspora that significantly contributes to both countries’ economies. President Zardari’s discussions with Sheikh Mohammed were focused on exploring new avenues for collaboration, particularly in sectors where the UAE has set a global benchmark such as tourism, emerging technologies, and infrastructure development. Dubai’s success as a global tourism hub offers valuable lessons for Pakistan, a country with rich cultural heritage and untapped tourism potential. By studying the UAE’s strategies in tourism promotion, Pakistan can learn how to develop its own tourism sector, creating new opportunities for economic growth. Similarly, the UAE’s leadership in technology, especially in areas like smart cities and renewable energy, provides a model for Pakistan as it seeks to modernize its infrastructure and develop its digital economy. Both countries stand to benefit from closer cooperation in these fields, as shared expertise could lead to innovation and greater economic competitiveness. Of late, reports emerged that Pakistanis are facing increased difficulties in obtaining UAE visas, a problem that could impact the substantial workforce that relies on opportunities in the UAE. We must address this concern through diplomatic channels, working to resolve the issue while ensuring that the UAE’s labour market needs are met. Strengthening the skills of Pakistan’s workforce in line with the UAE’s growing demand for skilled labour would help sustain the flow of workers and foster deeper economic cooperation. President Zardari’s visit has reaffirmed the strong and historic ties between Pakistan and the UAE, with both sides acknowledging the vast potential for collaboration. The path forward is clear: sustained engagement, shared learning, and a focus on innovation will ensure that the relationship between the two nations continues to thrive.
