Pak-US workforce synergy

2026-03-02 - 20:24

IMPORTANCE of Pak-US bilateral ties cannot be undermined amid recent positive reset between both countries revolving around significant geo-political developments. The United States has played a significant role in Pakistan’s foreign policy over the past seven decades, shaping a complex relationship marked by cooperation, estrangement and renewed engagement. Despite periodic tensions, the US remains an important development and security partner for Pakistan. As a major non-NATO ally, Pakistan has experienced both strategic partnership and sanctions, creating a relationship often defined by cycles of convergence and divergence. Today, however, workforce collaboration offers an opportunity to shift this relationship from an aid-based model toward a mutually beneficial economic partnership. The focus of Pak–US cooperation is increasingly moving toward technology, human capital development and innovation-driven growth. Pakistan’s young, English-speaking workforce presents a strong opportunity for American firms seeking cost-effective and skilled talent. More than 80 US companies already operate in Pakistan, directly employing over 120,000 workers. As technological transformation accelerates globally, both countries can expand collaboration in emerging sectors. Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence represent the most promising areas for cooperation through workforce exchange and skills development. Pakistan ranks among the world’s leading freelancing nations, creating strong potential for collaboration in software development, cybersecurity and AI training. Additional opportunities exist in semiconductor design, testing and packaging as well as mining and mineral development. Pakistan’s trained youth can also benefit from expanding cooperation in health-tech, medical research, financial technology and e-commerce. Collaboration in media, entertainment and cultural industries remains largely untapped and could further strengthen people-to-people connections. Pakistan offers a unique demographic advantage. With a population exceeding 240 million, it is the world’s fifth-most populous country and nearly two-thirds of its citizens are under the age of 30. This youthful demographic positions Pakistan as a valuable contributor to the global workforce. Approximately 65 million Pakistanis fall between the ages of 10 and 24, while a large share of the employed population is skilled, including millions working in IT, engineering and business services. Supported by over 116 million internet users and widespread Smartphone connectivity, Pakistan’s expanding digital ecosystem strengthens its position as a global outsourcing hub. For US companies, collaboration with Pakistani professionals offers several advantages. Remote hiring enables access to high-quality services at comparatively lower costs. The significant time difference between the two countries allows round-the-clock productivity, enabling continuous workflow across time zones. Moreover, Pakistan’s workforce is largely English-proficient and familiar with American business practices, easing integration into global operations. Despite these opportunities, sustained cooperation requires addressing challenges such as policy consistency, regulatory clarity and regional stability. Long-term success will depend on building institutional trust and creating predictable frameworks for investment and workforce mobility. Encouragingly, emerging cooperation in climate action, education and other non-traditional security areas provides a stable foundation for future engagement. A strategic workforce partnership between Pakistan and the United States can generate shared economic benefits while strengthening bilateral ties. By investing in skills, technology and innovation, both countries can transform their relationship into a forward-looking collaboration that supports economic growth, global competitiveness and sustainable development. —The writer is contributing columnist.
