Pakistan tops region as most Expensive Petrol Market after massive hike

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has topped the list of country with highest petrol prices in South Asia, sparking fears of a massive inflation wave. Citizens are demanding immediate government action as the cost of living threatens to spiral out of control. Despite claims of available petroleum reserves, the government’s decision to raise fuel prices means the impact will go far beyond petrol pumps. Economists warn that expensive fuel inevitably drives up transportation costs, which in turn increases the prices of everyday essentials, leaving families struggling to cope, especially during Ramadan. The numbers are startling, as petrol in Pakistan now costs Rs321.17 per litre, far exceeding prices in neighbouring countries. For comparison, a litre of petrol in India is just Rs94.77, while in Sri Lanka it stands at Rs293. Even in Bangladesh, petrol remains far cheaper at 116 taka per litre. The shockwaves have already begun. Goods transporters have announced a 20% hike in freight charges, a move that will inevitably push up prices of food and other essential commodities. Public transport operators are also raising fares, making daily travel more expensive and limiting people’s ability to visit loved ones or attend important social gatherings. Citizens are calling for urgent relief measures, arguing that without price reductions, the economic burden on ordinary households will become unbearable.
