WASHINGTON – A 40-year-old Pakistani-American man was found dead with signs of violence after firefighters responded to an apartment fire in the US capital earlier this week, the local authorities confirmed. The officials said that crews from the Washington Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived at a residential building after receiving the reports of smoke. The firefighters entered a small apartment, extinguished the blaze and discovered an unconscious man inside. He was later pronounced dead. The Metropolitan Police Department identified the deceased as Syed Hammad Hussain. Police said visible injuries were found on his body, raising suspicions of foul play and prompting a homicide investigation. In an official statement issued on Friday, police said that after an initial assessment, the case was formally handed over for further criminal investigation. No suspects had been identified so far. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage obtained from a nearby building. Sources familiar with the probe told local media that the footage shows Hussain entering the building shortly before the fire along with three other individuals, possibly including a woman. The same individuals were later seen leaving the building in haste. The local authorities have appealed to the public for assistance and announced a reward of $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Hussain’s family belongs to Lahore, and he had been residing in Washington. His funeral prayers will be offered today at the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church, Virginia.
