PTI says Imran Khan’s Medical Report to be shared with Family after SC Protest

KARACHI – Tensions escalated in Islamabad as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) mounted an aggressive protest campaign over the health of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, accusing authorities of secrecy, misinformation, and denial of basic rights. PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja told reporters outside the Supreme Court that Imran Khan’s family would finally be given access to his medical report, following a day-long sit-in by senior party leaders aimed at forcing transparency and securing a meeting with the former premier’s personal doctors. The protest, joined by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, came amid growing controversy over an eye-related medical procedure Imran Khan reportedly underwent last week. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar had confirmed that Imran was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) on the night of January 24 for what he described as a “20-minute” procedure. PTI leaders strongly challenged the official narrative, calling government statements misleading and incomplete. Raja said reports circulating about Imran Khan’s condition were deeply unsatisfactory and claimed that he was taken to hospital without his family’s knowledge, followed by days of official denial. “We remained outside the Supreme Court all day,” Raja said, adding that PTI lawmakers were also present. He revealed that the party had staged another sit-in outside Adiala Jail the previous night, which continued until 3am, underscoring the seriousness of their concerns. Raja said he had spent the entire day in discussions with the chief justice of Pakistan, Supreme Court officials, and the attorney general. Despite these efforts, he said the outcome fell short of PTI’s demands. According to Raja, authorities agreed to hand Imran Khan his medical reports in a sealed envelope, with a copy to be provided to his sisters. The reports, Raja said, would include medical findings from inside the jail as well as details of the procedure carried out at Pims. He stressed that once the documents were reviewed, Imran Khan’s family would decide whether the treatment being provided was acceptable and determine the next steps regarding his medical care. Despite this partial concession, Raja insisted that the real issue was Imran Khan’s incarceration itself, which he described as unlawful. He said PTI would continue nationwide protests to secure visitation rights and demand the former prime minister’s release. PTI’s political committee is expected to meet later on Friday to chart the party’s next move, in consultation with opposition leaders in both houses of parliament, including Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and National Assembly opposition leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai. Speaking alongside Raja, Abbas warned that blocking fundamental rights amounted to oppression, describing Imran Khan’s treatment as illegal, unconstitutional, and inhumane. Afridi said the protests outside both Adiala Jail and the Supreme Court were aimed solely at arranging a medical consultation between Imran Khan and his personal physicians, rejecting claims that the party was seeking political access. “Doctors will not hold political meetings,” he said, adding that medical care should not be restricted under any circumstances. Earlier in the day, PTI workers and lawmakers had set up camps outside the Supreme Court. Afridi arrived in the morning after spending the night protesting outside Adiala Jail and briefly left the sit-in to offer Friday prayers before returning. Abbas later joined the demonstration. Addressing reporters earlier, Afridi said the entire nation was alarmed by concerns over Imran Khan’s health and expressed hope that the chief justice would intervene. He warned that PTI would announce further action if their demands were ignored and complained that justice was being denied despite repeated court petitions. He also claimed that cases involving Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi had not been listed for hearings for nearly a year, asserting that their release would be immediate if the cases were heard. Following their arrival at the Supreme Court, Salman Akram Raja and senior PTI leader Sardar Latif Khosa met with the court registrar and the attorney general to formally raise concerns about Imran Khan’s eye condition and demand the release of the treating doctor’s report.
