LAHORE – The Punjab government has unveiled a Rs3 billion plan to install 30 advanced fog cannons on electric trucks as part of intensified efforts to tackle smog and rising air pollution in major cities and industrial hubs. The initiative is a component of the province’s broader clean air and climate resilience strategy aimed at cutting pollution levels and strengthening environmental protection mechanisms. The officials said that the fog cannon-equipped electric vehicles will be deployed in high-risk urban and industrial zones to suppress dust and reduce the concentration of hazardous particles in the atmosphere. In parallel, the government has earmarked Rs2.25 billion under the Lahore Air Improvement Framework to roll out a coordinated clean air programme in the provincial capital. A newly introduced super station system will, for the first time, enable authorities to identify pollution sources in real time. The “One City, One Policy” model is also being implemented to streamline and modernise air quality governance in Lahore. Across Punjab, more than 50 modern air quality monitoring units have already been installed. An automated quality assurance mechanism has been introduced to enhance data reliability and transparency. Additionally, a digital environmental monitoring system is being activated to ensure stricter oversight of industrial emissions. The government has also approved the upgradation of environmental laboratories, installation of advanced analytical equipment and the establishment of dedicated forensic facilities for emission testing. To ensure effective implementation and monitoring of these initiatives, an Environment and Climate Delivery Unit is being established. The unit will track progress through a digital dashboard and oversee compliance with environmental targets. The officials expressed confidence that the comprehensive measures would contribute to a major reduction in smog levels, safeguard public health and support long-term environmental sustainability in the province.
