Over 1900 students in multiple programs step into the future Zubair Yaqoob Hamdard University on Saturday celebrated its 28th convocation, awarding degrees to 1,912 scholars across PhD, MPhil, master’s, and bachelor’s programs. The ceremony, held at the university’s main campus, highlighted academic achievement, innovation, and the growing role of knowledge in shaping modern society. Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman, celebrated scientist and former federal minister, delivered the convocation address as the chief guest. Urging graduates to dedicate themselves to the pursuit of excellence and research, he emphasized that intellectual capital, not natural resources, now drives economic growth. “Truth is truly stranger than fiction today,” Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman remarked. “Countries investing in emerging fields of science and technology are surging ahead, while those that fail to innovate risk falling behind.” The scientist pointed to breakthroughs in genomics, materials engineering, medicine, and stem cell technology as examples of unprecedented progress. He noted that recent advances in anti-aging research could biologically extend human lifespans to 100–120 years. Addressing developments in neurology, he explained that thoughts are composed of molecules and atoms, highlighting the work of Elon Musk’s Neuralink, which has gained approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for brain-chip interface use. Reflecting on the origins of life, Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman illustrated that the elements formed during supernova explosions eventually converged to create planets and human life. “In a literal sense, we are made of stardust; truth is often stranger than fiction,” he said. The convocation marked significant academic milestones: 11 PhDs and 110 MPhil degrees were conferred, while 35 students received gold medals for exceptional performance. Additionally, five students earned the prestigious Hakim Mohammed Said Gold Awards, and three were recognized by the Institution of Engineers, Pakistan. Faculty accomplishments were also celebrated. Prof. Dr. Syed Mubeen was named Researcher of the Year, Dr. M. Faris received the Best Teacher Award, and Prof. Dr. Kamran Zaheer was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his enduring contributions to academia.
