PESHAWAR – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has announced a subsidy scheme for all motorcycle riders in the province to help offset the rising petrol prices in Pakistan. The subsidy is aimed at providing financial relief to commuters as fuel prices continue to rise. Addressing a press conference, Afridi stated that there are currently around 1.4 to 1.6 million registered motorcycles in the province, and each registered motorcycle owner will receive Rs2,200 under the new program. The chief minister, however, did not share details how the relief will be provided to the bike owners. He emphasized that the provincial government will bear the costs itself and that fares for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will not be increased. Criticizing the federal government, Afridi said the increase in petrol prices is akin to dropping a “petrol bomb” on the people. He stressed that the provincial government rejected the fuel price hike and urged the federal authorities to consult with the provinces and reduce extravagant spending instead of burdening citizens.
