Saving children’s hearts

THE measure of a humane society is found in how it protects its children, especially those at the fragile intersection of illness and hope. In Pakistan, congenital heart disease remains one of the most devastating threats to childhood survival. Thousands of families confront a harsh reality each year when children are diagnosed with structural cardiac abnormalities demanding urgent surgical correction. In this landscape, the Chief Minister’s Children Heart Surgery Program, under CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has emerged as one of the most compassionate and transformative public health interventions in Pakistan’s history. The successful completion of over 10,331 free pediatric cardiac surgeries represents a milestone of profound national significance. These are highly complex interventions correcting congenital malformations such as ventricular septal defects, atrial septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus and cyanotic heart conditions. Each surgery requires advanced cardiopulmonary bypass, meticulous intraoperative precision and intensive postoperative monitoring in pediatric cardiac ICUs. Without such intervention, children face progressive hypoxia, impaired organ perfusion and premature mortality. By providing these procedures free of cost, the program has transformed an unattainable medical privilege into a guaranteed public service. The program’s reach spans the nation. Children from every corner of Pakistan have benefited from Punjab’s cardiac care infrastructure, with the highest numbers from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (425), followed by Azad Jammu and Kashmir (250), federal regions (107), Gilgit Baltistan (34), Balochistan (28) and Sindh (27). Punjab continues to serve as a lifeline beyond its borders, with centers becoming referral epicenters where expertise transcends provincial divisions. Pakistan’s epidemiological reality underscores the program’s importance: nearly 50,000 children are born with congenital heart disease annually and about 25,000 require immediate surgery to survive. Untreated, these conditions cause irreversible myocardial stress, growth retardation and reduced life expectancy. Institutional strengthening has been central. Expansion at Children’s Hospital Lahore increased cardiac surgeons to 12 and physicians to 34, enhancing surgical throughput and outcomes. The inauguration of a modern pediatric ICU equipped with advanced ventilatory support, invasive monitoring and specialized nursing care ensures optimal recovery and minimizes complications. CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s direct engagement with patients reflects governance grounded in empathy. Her visits to the ICU and ceremonies marking over 10,000 surgeries reaffirm the state’s commitment to the impecunious, strengthening public trust and moral legitimacy. The broader pediatric vision includes 800 cochlear and 200 bone marrow transplants, restoring auditory and hematopoietic function. Globally, pediatric cardiac surgery is technically demanding and financially prohibitive. By offering these services free, the state removes financial barriers and demonstrates that advanced tertiary care can be delivered as a public good. Economically and socially, timely surgery restores normal function, enabling children to grow, learn and participate fully in society, preserving human capital and preventing intergenerational poverty. Symbolically, every treated child represents a victory over inequality and vulnerability. Punjab’s leadership in pediatric cardiac care positions it as a beacon of humane governance, showing that compassion combined with expertise can transform a generation. By protecting children’s hearts, the state safeguards its future. The Chief Minister’s Children Heart Surgery Program is not only a medical achievement but a moral triumph that will resonate for decades. — The writer is a Lahore-based public policy analyst.
