ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Monday appointed Advocate Salman Safdar as friend of the court [amicus curie] in the Toshakhana criminal case and granted him permission to access former prime minister Imran Khan’s jail barrack at Adiala Jail. A SC two-member bench comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan while hearing the Toshakhana criminal case filed against Imran Khan. During the proceedings, Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan informed the court that, in compliance with its order dated August 24, 2023, a written response had been submitted in chambers. He said that at the time the order was issued, the PTI founder was lodged in Attock Jail, and a written report was submitted on August 28, 2023. He added that medical reports covering the period from August 5 to August 18 were also attached with the submission. Chief Justice Yahya Afridi observed that following the August 24, 2023 order, no subsequent direction was placed on record that had formally satisfied the Supreme Court. The court expressed confidence in Salman Safdar and announced his appointment as friend of the court. The bench noted that the earlier report under the August 24 order pertained to a time when Imran Khan was imprisoned at Attock Jail, and said it was appropriate to seek an updated report regarding his living conditions. The court directed Salman Safdar, in his capacity as friend of the court, to visit Adiala Jail and granted him access to Imran Khan’s jail barrack so that he could submit a written report. The Supreme Court instructed Advocate Salman Safdar to submit a detailed written report by Tuesday regarding the former prime minister’s condition in jail and the facilities available to him. The court adjourned the hearing of the Toshakhana criminal case until February 12.
