ISLAMABAD – Supreme Court on Thursday ordered that former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan be provided access to his personal doctors and be allowed to make phone calls to his children. A two-member bench Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan, issued the ruling after analyzing a medical report of Khan. The report indicated that Imran Khan had expressed dissatisfaction with the medical facilities available to him and requested access to specialist eye doctors. During the hearing, Attorney General Anwar Mansoor informed the court that the government was prepared to provide access to expert ophthalmologists. Chief Justice Afridi emphasized that Khan should also be allowed to contact his children via phone, noting that he is currently in state custody and that all prisoners should have equal access to medical facilities. The court directed that a team of doctors be formed to conduct an eye examination of Imran Khan. Both measures are to be implemented by February 16. The court stressed that health is a priority and that interventions were necessary to ensure adequate healthcare for Khan, similar to that provided to all prisoners. The attorney general confirmed that providing health facilities is the state’s responsibility and that if any prisoner is dissatisfied, the state would take action. CJP Afridi also highlighted the importance of allowing phone calls to children, expressing confidence in the government’s cooperation. The court later issued an order for Imran Khan to have phone contact with his children, Qasim and Suleman.
