KARACHI – Senior Minister of Sindh, Sharjeel Inam Memon, underscored the growing threat posed by deepfake technology and AI-generated content, describing them as significant challenges for both the government and society. On the second day of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPA) in Karachi, which was dedicated to key global issues, Memon addressed the session on fake news and artificial intelligence. He emphasized that fake content created through AI has become a serious issue for not only the government but also political parties. According to Memon, AI-generated fake material is harming society and public discourse. The session, hosted by Sharmila Faruqi, also discussed the increasing trend of fake news and its implications on political stability and public trust. Memon highlighted that the Information Department is actively monitoring the situation around the clock, but a more effective system to distinguish between real and fake content is urgently needed. He called for the development of AI detection tools to tackle the issue. Memon also pointed out the alarming rise in the spread of false news using the names of reputable TV channels and the manipulation of audio and video content. He noted that the government is closely monitoring social media platforms, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Instagram, to curb the spread of fake news. The senior minister emphasized that those involved in spreading false information must face consequences, as such misinformation could potentially endanger lives. He called for stronger legislation to address fake news, citing the need for improved laws under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). Memon also underlined the importance of professional training for journalists to prevent the spread of unverified news that could harm reputations. The discussion on AI and fake news was further elaborated upon by Daniyal Chaudhry, Member of the National Assembly, who noted that while the government has taken steps to address the issue, there is a need for further work on various aspects of fake news. Chaudhry highlighted the significant rise in AI usage over the past year, emphasizing the need for more comprehensive frameworks and regulations. Farah Azeem Shah, a Member of the Provincial Assembly of Balochistan, stressed that misinformation is not accidental but deliberately spread by various groups. She pointed to the use of fake news and altered videos by terrorist organizations in Balochistan to demoralize security forces and create fear among civilians. Shah advocated for a calm, legal, and transparent response to misinformation, urging the importance of timely, verified information to counter rumors and false narratives. The second session of the CPA conference, hosted by Senator Sherry Rehman, focused on climate change. Rehman raised concerns about the widespread use of plastic, linking it to rising health risks including cancer. She also criticized the lack of effective recycling and low-cost solutions in industries, stressing the urgent need for practical action to address environmental challenges. Rehman further discussed the depletion of water resources, particularly in Balochistan, and warned that the availability of fresh water is rapidly diminishing. She emphasized the need for sustainable water management and noted that the River Indus cannot provide unlimited water, with monsoon rains offering only temporary relief. Tamkeen Akhtar Niazi, Member of the National Assembly, highlighted the need for advanced water purification techniques and discussed Punjab’s efforts to tackle air pollution. She also noted that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is actively monitoring flood-prone areas, heatwaves, and food and water shortages using satellite imaging. The conference urged both government and citizens to work together on environmental issues. The participants emphasized that protecting the environment is not only a governmental responsibility but also a moral obligation.
