PESHAWAR – Terrorists launched deadly attack on police in Dera Ismail Khan, leaving 4 officers, including SHO Faheem Mumtaz, dead. The intense firefight also left Deputy Superintendent of Police DSP Paharpur Adnan critically injured, police officials confirmed. Authorities immediately deployed a heavy police contingent, surrounding the area to neutralize any remaining threats. This comes months after a high-profile operation against Indian-sponsored Fitnah-ul-Khawarij in December, during which 7 militants were killed and arsenals of weapons and ammunition seized. According to the Pakistan Army spokesperson, the slain militants were involved in multiple terrorist activities across the region. Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) also paid tribute to Naik Yasir Khan, who fought valiantly before being martyred in the exchange of fire. Yasir Khan, aged 34, hailed from Mardan. This brazen attack marks a grave escalation in the fight against terrorism in Dera Ismail Khan, underscoring the ongoing threats faced by law enforcement on the frontline. KP witnessed sharp surge in terrorist activity in 2025, making it one of the deadliest years in recent memory. Militants, primarily from the TTP and allied groups, carried out hundreds of attacks targeting police, security forces, and civilians across districts including Dera Ismail Khan, North Waziristan, Bajaur, Bannu, and Peshawar. High-profile incidents included Mir Ali army convoy bombing in June, which killed 13 soldiers, the Darul Uloom Haqqania seminary attack in Nowshera, and multiple IED and ambush attacks on police, including officers like SHO Faheem Mumtaz. Throughout the year, security forces conducted thousands of counter-terror operations, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of militants and the arrest of over a thousand suspects, yet attacks continued into early 2026, with militants still targeting police and civilians despite aggressive security measures.
