KARACHI – Pakistan officially announced to lock horns T20 World Cup match against arch-rivals India as the government made announcement, saying the decision was taken to “protect the spirit of cricket” and support the continuity of the sport across all participating nations. This announcement follows high-level meetings between a delegation from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, where the team’s participation in the crucial India match was thoroughly discussed. The decision has come under strong encouragement from neighboring nations. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake personally urged Pakistan to play the match, recalling Pakistan’s unwavering support during times of terrorism in Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed these sentiments, highlighting the long-standing cricketing bond between the two nations and the mutual support shown during challenging times. He confirmed he would inform the Sri Lankan president of Pakistan’s “final decision” after consultations. Meanwhile, Bangladesh has also thrown its weight behind Pakistan’s participation. BCB President Aminul Islam praised Pakistan for its exemplary sportsmanship and solidarity, calling on the team to play the February 15 match for the benefit of the wider cricketing ecosystem. He expressed deep gratitude for Pakistan’s efforts to support Bangladesh during recent challenges, emphasizing the historic cricketing brotherhood between the two countries. ICC made it clear that Bangladesh will face no penalties for opting out of the T20 World Cup, while also confirming that the nation will host an ICC event prior to the 2031 tournament. The governing body described discussions with the PCB and BCB as “open, constructive, and forward-looking,” reaffirming Bangladesh’s status as a core cricketing nation. ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta stressed that while Bangladesh’s absence from the tournament was unfortunate, it does not diminish the country’s importance in international cricket. “Our focus remains on long-term development, competitiveness, and global integration of Bangladeshi cricket,” he said, emphasizing the ICC’s commitment to nurturing the sport in the region despite short-term disruptions. Initially, Men in Green had been cleared to participate in the T20 World Cup 2026 but was not scheduled to face India in Colombo following Bangladesh’s withdrawal due to safety concerns amid strained political relations. Sri Lanka Cricket intervened, urging Pakistan to reconsider the boycott, warning that skipping the match would not only harm tourism but also result in financial losses for the island nation, still recovering from the 2022 economic crisis. It is important to note that Pakistan and India have not played bilateral cricket for over a decade, meeting only in global or regional tournaments. This high-stakes encounter, therefore, carries not just sporting significance but also immense political and cultural weight, capturing the attention of millions of fans across South Asia. As Pakistan prepares to step onto the field against its historic rivals, cricket fans across the globe are eagerly awaiting a match that promises to be as dramatic off the pitch as it will be on it.
