South Africa edged past Afghanistan in the two super-over-a-side match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. This is the first time that a T20I match has been decided in the second super over, which led to the elimination of Afghanistan from the race to advance to the Super Eight stage. As both sides were tied at 187 on the conclusion of their innings, the match was taken into a super over. Following equal scores and the equal boundaries, the match was decided in the second super over. Needing 24 to win, Afghanistan managed to reach 19 for the loss of two wickets, losing the game to the Proteas by four runs. Chasing a challenging 188-run target for victory, Afghanistan were bundled out for 187 in 19.4 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the top scorer, who made 84 off 42 balls, hitting four fours and seven huge sixes. Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 22 off 17 balls, skipper Rashid Khan 20 off 12 balls, Noor Ahmed and Darwaish Rasooli 15 each, and Ibrahim Zadran 12 off 12 balls. Batting first, South Africa managed to reach 187/6 in their quota of 20overs. Ryan Rickelton was the highest scorer for the Proteas with 61 off just 28 balls, laced with five fours and four maximums. Quinton de Kock contributed 59 off 41 balls, hitting five fours and three maximums. Dewald Brevis made 23 off 19 balls, David Miller an unbeaten 20 off 15 balls, and Marco Jansen 16 off just seven balls. Azmatullah took three wickets and Rashid Khan two, while Fazalhaq Farooqi got one wicket.
