AHMEDABAD – In a gripping encounter in Ahmedabad, South Africa triumphed over Afghanistan in a dramatic second Super Over after the first one ended in a tie during their ICC T20 World Cup Group D match. Afghanistan batted first in the initial Super Over, posting a score of 17 runs. South Africa responded in kind, matching the score to set up the need for another Super Over. In the decisive second Super Over, South Africa, with David Miller and Tristan Stubbs at the crease, scored 23 runs without losing a wicket. Afghanistan, however, could only manage 19 runs in their reply, giving the Proteas a narrow 4-run victory. Earlier, in the regular match, Afghanistan’s captain Rashid Khan won the toss and invited South Africa to bat. South Africa’s opening pair of Adam Markram and Quinton de Kock started strongly, but Markram was dismissed for a duck at 12 runs, caught off Fazal Haq Farooqi’s delivery. De Kock and Rassie van der Dussen then took charge, both reaching half-centuries in the same over. De Kock scored 59 runs, and van der Dussen contributed 61 runs before both were dismissed. Further runs from Dwaine Pretorius (23) and David Miller (20) guided South Africa to a total of 190/7. In Afghanistan’s chase, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran gave a solid start, but a dramatic collapse saw Afghanistan lose five wickets in just 13 balls. Despite a blistering 87-run innings from Gurbaz, which included 7 sixes and 4 fours, Afghanistan fell short, being bowled out for 187 runs in the final over. South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi was the standout bowler, claiming three wickets in Afghanistan’s innings. Despite the thrilling fightback from Afghanistan, South Africa held their nerve and secured the victory after a tense Super Over finish.
