WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of a 10 percent tariff on all goods imported into the United States following the Supreme Court’s decision to declare the additional tariffs illegal. Trump has signed an executive order to enforce the decision, saying the tariff will be effective for 150 days, with certain goods exempted from the temporary duty. The exempted items include minerals, fertilizers, metals, energy equipment, agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, and raw materials for medicines. The new tariff will not apply to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). In response to the court’s decision, President Trump remarked that certain members of the court would be “embarrassed” by the ruling. He also stated that while the decision would make the world happy, this happiness would be short-lived, as the profits from the tariffs would continue to rise. Earlier, the US Supreme Court had ruled that President Trump’s additional tariffs on other countries were illegal. The court stated that the law under which Trump imposed these tariffs was designed for national emergencies and does not grant the president the authority to implement additional tariffs. The court emphasized that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, under which the tariffs were implemented, does not grant the president the power to impose additional tariffs in the context of international trade disputes. It is recalled that President Trump had imposed these tariffs on numerous countries, including Pakistan, as part of his broader trade strategy.
