Following washout against Ireland on Tuesday, Zimbabwe joined Sri Lanka in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup from Group B. Australia are now out of the T20 World Cup, as even a victory in their last group stage game and Zimbabwe’s loss against Sri Lanka will not be enough for them to reach the Super Eight. Zimbabwe will now play against India, South Africa and the West Indies in their campaign to proceed further in the global event. The top two sides will advance to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. As points will not be carried through to the next stage, Super Eight will, as such, be a fresh start of the tournament for the top eight teams in two separate groups. Zimbabwe versus Ireland match at Pallekele was called off without a ball being bowled due to persistent rain and a wet outfield. After several inspections with the pitch covered due to intermittent rain, the on-field umpires called off the game. As a result, both teams got one point each, which was enough for Zimbabwe to advance to the next stage ahead of Australia and Ireland. Sri Lanka had already advanced to the Super Eight after chasing down a competitive target set by the Kangaroos in the high-stakes match yesterday.
